Atypical cortical activation during fine motor tasks in autism spectrum disorder

نویسندگان

چکیده

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty coordinated fine motor skills, but the degree of significantly varies from person to person. To elucidate cause this diversity, we monitored brain activity during movement tasks (tying bowknots) by near-infrared spectroscopy in 17 adults ASD and 18 typical development matched for age, gender, intelligence quotient (IQ). We also examined relationship between activation developmental characteristics, including severity, using Autism-Spectrum Quotient Multi-dimensional Scale Pervasive Developmental Disorder Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Although participants group did not show significant clumsiness, their right prefrontal cortexes were relatively less activated, particularly individuals poor social skills inattention. Our study indicates that traits may use different strategies when performing movements; is, they areas responsible processing visual image or planning behaviors.

Comparison of Motor Skills in At-risk with Autism Spectrum Disorder Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Typical Development Children

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder characterized by repetitive and stereotypical patterns, and difficulties with social communication and interaction in early childhood. Motor development and dysfunction in children with ASD has been the subject of study in recent years and has attracted much of the attention of researchers. As motor dysfunctions can ...

Cortical activation during attention to sound in autism spectrum disorders.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) can demonstrate hypersensitivity to sounds as well as a lack of awareness of them. Several functional imaging studies have suggested an abnormal response in the auditory cortex of such subjects, but it is not known whether these subjects have dysfunction in the auditory cortex or are simply not listening. We measured changes in blood oxygenated ...

Atypical Color Preference in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

So far, virtually no study has ever investigated color preference in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In order to address this issue, 29 boys with ASD varying in age between 4 and 17 years, and 38 age-matched typically developing (TD) boys were studied regarding their preference among six colors: red, pink, yellow, brown, green, and blue, in clinical settings. When mean rank of pre...

Atypical Time Course of Object Recognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder

In neurotypical observers, it is widely believed that the visual system samples the world in a coarse-to-fine fashion. Past studies on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have identified atypical responses to fine visual information but did not investigate the time course of the sampling of information at different levels of granularity (i.e. Spatial Frequencies, SF). Here, we examined this question...

Atypical perception of affective prosody in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in language and social-emotional cognition. Yet, findings of emotion recognition from affective prosody in individuals with ASD are inconsistent. This study investigated emotion recognition and neural processing of affective prosody in high-functioning adults with ASD relative to neurotypical (NT) adults. Individuals with ASD showed...
